Describe your company. How long have you been there, and what led you to this career choice?
I founded Buckley Media (BuckleyMedia.com) in 2013 as a branding and domains agency. I’d just sold LagunaBeach.com for the Castello Brothers, along with a marketing plan and site redevelopment blueprint I’d created. The new owners hired me on to implement my plans, thus the formation of Buckley Media.
Since that time, I’ve had the pleasure of branding a number of exciting companies (both startups and established companies) and brokering (on both the buy and sell side) some amazing domains including my recent sale of Sleeping.com and Snoring.com for over $1M. I work on an ongoing basis with both the Castello Brothers and Roy Messer on their amazing portfolios, as well as a select number of other domain investors on their valuable ultra-premium domains: BuckleyMedia.com/premiumdomains
How does your career compare to what you envisioned in your youth?
When I was seven years old, I proclaimed to my grandmother that I wanted to be a writer, a hostess and an acrobat when I grew up. Flash forward to age 43: I throw a mean dinner party, I write all day (both professionally and personally—check out http://KateBuckley.com), and if we can count Pilates as acrobatics, I think I’m somewhat on track. 😉
What are your thoughts on the new TLDs?
Not a fan.
How has GDPR affected your business, if at all?
Not in any meaningful fashion that I can currently detect.
What kinds of changes to you foresee in this industry within the industry in the next year? The next 5 years?
Greater regulation. I’m a big fan of the ICA.
What are the most innovative products or services that are currently impacting your business?
Honestly, I’d have to say my HUGE new Acer monitor!

I’m an award-winning poet and served as the inaugural Poet Laureate of Laguna Beach
What was one of your biggest “Aha!” moments in life?
Quitting my ad agency job and going to work with David and Michael Castello in 1998. I went from total security to total entrepreneurism. And never looked back.
If you had fifteen extra minutes each day, what would you do with them?
What’s the most recent thing you learned (big or small)?
That I need less sleep than I’d previously thought!
Who has been the biggest influence on your life, and what did they teach you?
My great-grandmother (Christine Shouse Dummit, 1905 – 2007). She was the purest example I’ve ever seen of unconditional love, coupled with curiosity, compassion, and a keen sense of humor. A plucky country doctor’s daughter from Mt. Eden, Kentucky, she moved to Lexington to attend university (at a time when many women didn’t even graduate high school).
Christine earned her BA in English, and taught continuing education to Appalachian schoolteachers before marrying my attorney great-grandfather. They were both graduates of the University of Kentucky (BA and JD, respectively), and met when Granddad dated one of Granny’s friends (“Well,” she’d say with a mischievous glint in her eye, “I guess he just liked me better.”). They had many adventures together (including Granddad’s run for Governor in 1947 and his later service as President of Optimist International), and were happily married till his death in 1973. I was born one year later, and had the blissful experience of Gran in my almost daily life till her death in 2007 at 102.

Name 3 things you can’t travel without.
My laptop, lip balm, a great book.
What object would you put in a time capsule that best represents who you are today?
Sadly, my laptop!
Where is your favourite place to escape?
Anywhere with bad wifi. And my boyfriend.
What was the best advice you were ever given?
Listen more than you talk.
